DJ lynnée denise is bringing Sound System Ecologies to the Bijlmer, a place where many of Amsterdam’s sharpest listeners have tuned their ears. In collaboration with Bijlmer Parktheater’s GembertheeSessies, denise is curating a program focused on intimate conversations and reflections on creative processes and practices.
Sound System Ecologies is concerned with questions pertaining the intersections of music, enslavement, and Black spatiality. This project examines the significance of forced migration and enslavement of people alongside the movement of sound across former Dutch colonial territories and waterscapes.
The evening will feature frameworks and perspectives from visual artist Torkwase Dyson (US), with Anesu Chigariro (Zimbabwe) as the moderator.
Honing into the intricate connections between music and ecology, this project offers a sound-centered perspective on the history of slavery within the so-called Dutch Kingdom. Through listening sessions, public conversations, and film screenings, we will trace the roots and routes of Dutch colonial hand in the social engineering of slavery, apartheid, and colonialism. Collectively , we will learn how sound, music, culture, and ecology disrupted the colonial grammar of space. We will explore these themes with transnational artists, curators, and researchers, examining sound and ecologies from multiple geographies.

DJ lynnée denise brengt Sound System Ecologies naar de plek waar veel van de scherpste luisteraars van Amsterdam de manieren waarop ze horen hebben gevormd: de Bijlmer. In samenwerking en conversatie met onder andere GembertheeSessies van het Bijlmer Parktheater stelt Denise een programma samen waarin intieme gesprekken en reflecties op proces en praktijk centraal staan.
Sound System Ecologies stelt vragen met betrekking tot muziek, slavernij en Black spaciality/Zwarte ruimtelijkheid. In dit project denken we na over het belang van de manier waarop de gedwongen verplaatsing en het tot slaaf maken van personen gepaard gaan met het reizen van geluid binnen voormalige, door Nederland gekoloniseerde land- en waterlandschappen.
Deze avond bieden beeldend kunstenaar Torkwase Dyson (VS). Anesu Chigariro (Zimbabwe) zal de moderator zijn.
Sound System Ecologies richt zich op de complexe manieren waarop muziek en ecologie met elkaar verbonden zijn. Vanuit daar biedt het een geluidgericht perspectief op de geschiedenis van de slavernij binnen het zogeheten Nederlandse koninkrijk. We brengen -door middel van luistersessies, panelgesprekken en filmscreenings- de wortels en routes van NL’s koloniale hand in de social engineering van slavernij, apartheid en kolonialisme in kaart.
Door dit te doen leren we gezamenlijk hoe geluid, muziek, cultuur en ecologie de koloniale grammatica van de ruimte onderbraken. We zullen geluid en ecologieën uit meerdere regio's verkennen met transnationale kunstenaars, curatoren en onderzoekers.

About Torkwase Dyson
Torkwase Dyson (b. 1973, Chicago) describes herself as a painter working across multiple mediums to explore the continuity between ecology, infrastructure, and architecture. Dyson’s abstract works are visual and material systems used to construct fusions of surface tension, movement, scale, real and finite space. With an emphasis on the ways black and brown bodies perceive and negotiate space as information, Dyson looks to spatial liberation strategies from historical and contemporary perspectives, seeking to uncover new understandings of the potential for more livable geographies.

About Anesu Chigariro
Anesu Chigariro is an editor in sexual and reproductive health education and a community and health psychology practitioner. She is an aspirant narrative medicine scholar with a focus on social and behaviour change communication, contemporary critical theory and visual culture. Anesu is based in Harare, Zimbabwe.
About lynnée denise
A global practitioner of sound, language, and Black Atlantic thought, Lynnée Denise is an Amsterdam-based writer and interdisciplinary artist from Los Angeles, California. Shaped by her parent’s record collection and the 1980s, Denise’s work traces and foregrounds the intimacies of underground nightclub movements, music migration, and bass culture in the African Diaspora. She coined the term DJ Scholarship in 2013, which explores how knowledge is gathered, interpreted, and produced through a conceptual and theoretical framework, shifting the role of the DJ from a party purveyor to an archivist and cultural worker. A doctoral student in the Department of Visual Culture at the Goldsmiths University of London, Denise’s research contends with how iterations of sound system culture construct a living archive and refuge for a Black queer diaspora.

Torkwase Dyson (geb. 1973, Chicago) beschrijft zichzelf als een schilder die via meerdere media de continuïteit tussen ecologie, infrastructuur en architectuur onderzoekt. De abstracte werken van Dyson zijn visuele en materiële systemen die worden gebruikt om samensmeltingen van oppervlaktespanning, bewegingen, schaal, reële en eindige ruimte te construeren.
