For this year’s first edition of the GembertheeSessies (GingerteaSessions) we’re connecting Bijlmer to Cape Town. We’ll do this through the works and research of writer, director, producer, curator and cultural worker Adrian Van Wyk. Simone Zeefuik interviews Adrian about his creative processes and his current research projects through which he links decolonial activism in the Netherlands and South Africa. The session opens with the screening of the short documentary What The Soil Remembers. Adrian is the producer and researcher of this short film directed by José Cardoso.
About Adrian Van Wyk
Adrian is a filmmaker/creative producer and cultural historian from Cape Town, South Africa. He completed a MA in History at Stellenbosch University. His dissertation, titled From Jamaica to the Cape Flats: Reflecting on the manifestations of a Cape Town Hip Hop Culture, unpacked the diasporic movements of Hip Hop culture onto the Cape Flats.
His research laid the foundation for the documentary film he is currently co-directing and producing titled Notes From The Underground: A Cape Town Hip Hop Story. The film has received support from the South African National Film and Video Foundation and forms part of a feature film slate currently in collaborative development with Azania Rizing Productions. This includes the magical realist urban adventure film titled ApeTown.
Adrian was nominated by the Mail and Guardian as one of the top 200 South Africans in 2015 in the arts and culture sector. In 2023, a documentary short film that Adrian produced and researched titled What the Soil Remembers enjoyed its world premier at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR) where it was also awarded the Ammodo Tiger Short Award.

On the website of International Film Festival Rotterdam Lyse Ishimwe - initiator of the Brussels’ film platform Recognition - describes the film as follows:
"In 1960s South Africa, a close-knit community from Die Vlakte was forcibly and violently uprooted to make way for the Stellenbosch University as part of the Apartheid regime’s segregation measures. José Cardoso’s What the Soil Remembers recounts the traumatic effect displacement had on residents by bringing to the foreground a university that is still grappling with its racist legacy. To this day, the Die Vlakte community is fighting for justice and seeking reparations with little to no tangible solutions.”

Op deze avond vertoont Adrian, What The Soil Remembers, een korte film geregisseerd door José Cardoso. Over Adrian van Wyk
Adrian is een filmmaker, creatief producent, en cultureel historicus uit Kaapstad, Zuid-Afrika. Hij behaalde zijn master in Geschiedenis aan de Stellenbosch University. Zijn proefschrift, getiteld From Jamaica to the Cape Flats: Reflecting on the manifestations of a Cape Town Hip Hop Culture, onderzocht diasporische bewegingen binnen Hip Hop in relatie tot de Cape Flats.
Dit onderzoek vormde de basis voor de documentaire Notes From The Underground: A Cape Town Hip Hop Story, die hij momenteel co-regisseert en produceert. De film, gesteund door de South African National Film and Video Foundation, is onderdeel van een reeks films ontwikkeld in samenwerking met Azania Rizing Productions, waaronder de magisch realistische stedelijke avonturenfilm ApeTown.

In de jaren 60 werd een hechte gemeenschap met geweld van Die Vlakte verwijderd om plaats te maken voor de Universiteit van Stellenbosch, in het kader van het segregatiebeleid van het apartheidsregime. José Cardoso’s What the Soil Remembers toont de traumatische impact van ontheemding op de bewoners door in te zoomen op een universiteit die nog steeds worstelt met haar racistische verleden. De Die Vlakte-gemeenschap strijdt nog altijd voor gerechtigheid en herstelbetalingen.
